Evaluating News Sources

Fake News

Fake news includes media that is published to spread misinformation or propaganda about a topic. These pieces may include information that has been manipulated or fabricated. For more information about fake news, check out Lied Library's Fake News libguide.

Fact Checking

If you are at all suspicious about the verity of the news source you are citing, it can be worthwhile to use a fact checker. Below are some resources:

  • Duke Reporters' Lab

    • A database of global fact checking sites.
  • FactCheck.org

    • Fact checking site by the Annenberg Public Policy Center.
  • Politifact

    • Pulitzer Prize winning site that provides journalism fact-checking.
  • Snopes

    • Originally dedicated to investigating urban legends and folklore, Snopes now also fact checks news stories.
