Law Journal Resources

A guide for law journal editors and staffers to cite checking.

Introduction

This guide is designed to assist law students become familiar with cite checking. It's also designed to serve as a resource that students can refer back to for cite checking assistance.

What is cite checking and why do we do it?

Cite checking refers to the process of

  1. verifying the accuracy of sources an author cites
  2. checking to ensure those cited sources actually support the assertion the author is making, and
  3. ensuring the citation conforms to the Bluebook rules.

Accordingly, the process of cite checking requires you to obtain an exact copy of each of the sources an author cites. The rest of this guide will offer guidance on locating the most common U.S. sources and list Bluebook resources.
